Installing the 5590 is a very simple process thanks to HP's handy quick install guide. The business-like grey 5590 has such a feeder and includes nice extras such as film negative and slide scanning. Much like the feeders seen on advanced photocopiers, the automatic document feeder banishes the days of manually switching documents, even coping with double sided pages. Scanners come in various flavours, but there's one feature that remains almost universally under-utilised: the automatic document feeder. If you want a fast way of scanning documents, the Scanjet 5590 is a good solution. For photo scanning and film scanning, the results were less impressive. The 5590 is much slower than document scanners like the Fujitsu ScanSnap fi-5110EOX]. Slide scans offer good dynamic range for a flatbed scanner, maintaining detail in both light and dark areas in a slide of a dark tree line against a bright sky with white clouds. You have to remove it from the scanner's platen when you're not using it. The transparency adapter works reasonably well, but it's a little clumsy to use. These more sophisticated features are typically found in such scanners as the Microtek ScanMaker 6100, which is designed more for photos than for office scanning. What holds the 5590 down to a 3.5 rating for photos is that it can't digitally remove scratches and dust or minimize graininess, although there is an option for enhancing colors in faded photos.
